Compared to adults children may have a higher incidence of tooth decay. This is due a combination of multiple factors .improper brushing technique which may be due to lack of awareness, motivation or pure laziness.
In children fluoridated toothpaste is not recommended since there is risk of the child swallowing the paste leading to risk of complications. Motor skills are also not as fine tuned as there adult counterparts. All of this leads to increase and rapid spread of tooth decay. There are different methods of minimizing the incidence and spread of decay.

Fluoride treatment
Topical application of Fluoride gel is done by us. The fluoride gel is dispensed in a tray fitting the child's teeth and placed in the mouth. It can also be applied locally with the use of cotton pellets. There is no pain or discomfort to the child. Multiple sessions are required time intervals as needed by the child. The fluoride gets absorbed into the tooth enamel making it more resistant to acid attack of the bacteria hence decreases decay. It also reverses the process in areas of initial decay

Pit & Fissure Sealant
The molars have deep grooves and pits on the chewing surface. Food tends to get retained far more in these areas. Decay begins most commonly in these deep grooves. Pit and fissure sealants is a protective coat added to these problem areas. Pit and Fissure sealing should be done as soon as the permanent tooth completely erupts in the mouth. The first permanent molar erupts between the age of 6 to 7 yrs accompanied by incisors and followed by premolars and canines. Pit and fissure does not cause any pain or discomfort.
